Until recently there were only three types of mediums to transmit internet to most mobile devices, these being Broadband, Wifi and Dial-up. Despite them all having their advantages, they all had disadvantages that limited their usage.

Whilst Broadband access can transfer data at relatively fast speeds they tend to cost a lot of money, therefore this is not an option for many. Wifi is a type of wireless technology that allows data to be also transfered at relatively fast speeds, although the range of Wifi networks is generally up to about 50 metres if no walls or obstacles are in the way. Finally dial-up connections are cheap, yet extremely slow and practically uncomparable to more modern cabling or wireless technologies.

WiMax provides a mixture of all of the advantages of other accessing methods. They allow high speed data transfers to occur wirelessly, but most importantly, on ranges of up to 50 km.
